A Nigerian man has taken to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to expose a shocking discovery involving the caretaker of his residential building.
According to the user, identified as @Drweloveu, tenants in his building have unknowingly been paying ₦1.3 million annually as rent, when the actual amount fixed by the landlord is ₦500,000.
The revelation came to light after the landlord paid an unannounced visit to the property. During casual conversations with the tenants, he reportedly mentioned the true cost of the apartments, which left the residents stunned and outraged.
“So apparently, the caretaker of our house has been collecting ₦1.3m per annum from tenants while the actual rent is ₦500k. The owner came around and casually said this house is cheap for just ₦500k. And the rest is history,” the tenant wrote.
This means the caretaker has allegedly been pocketing a whopping ₦800,000 per tenant each year, without the landlord's knowledge — a scam running into millions, depending on the number of occupied units.
The post has since gone viral, sparking widespread conversations online about the dangers of dishonest caretakers and the need for tenants to have direct contact with property owners.
Many users advised tenants to insist on rent receipts signed by landlords or their verified representatives, and to carry out due diligence before signing rental agreements.
As of now, there has been no public response from the landlord or the caretaker in question.
