John Akpan, a final-year student of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, has died under sudden and heartbreaking circumstances during a karate training session on Saturday, April 12, 2025.
Akpan, who was pursuing his Higher National Diploma in the Department of Mass Communication, reportedly left his off-campus lodge for his usual Saturday karate practice when the incident occurred. A source close to the Polytechnic community told PUNCH that the student collapsed immediately upon entering the pitch.
He was rushed to a private hospital in Ikot Ekpene, where he was referred to the General Hospital. Sadly, upon arrival, doctors pronounced him dead.
According to the President of the Journalism and Media Studies Students Association, Mr. Nsoefen Mark Akpan, who witnessed the events unfold, some students struggled to accept the hospital’s verdict and took John to a church for prayers, but their request was declined.
A spiritualist later claimed he could revive the young man, but after unsuccessful attempts, he declared that John had already been "admitted into the spirit world." The students then took his body to the mortuary.
“The corpse was returned to the mortuary, but many students still held on to hope, waiting to see if our colleague would come back,” Akpan shared.
The Head of Department, Dr. Inemesit Umore, visited the hospital to calm the agitated students and ensured proper communication with the deceased’s family.
John was said to have shown no signs of illness prior to the incident and had written an exam just two days earlier. He was also known to be the coordinator of the karate training sessions held every Saturday.
The Polytechnic community is now mourning the loss of one of its own — a dedicated student, leader, and friend.
